I took this Animation Bootcamp course run by the School of Motion in Summer 2018. It was a great learning experience and a lot of fun! In no particular order this page presents most of the projects I worked through whilst on the course.

Be The Ice Sculptor

This was the final project on which I was able to apply all the new animation skills and principles I gained on the course. As with all the other projects on this page, we were provided with the artwork and audio.

Ministry of Eye Control

This project gave me the opportunity to apply my understanding of “eye trace”. Loved working on this one – so much fun! Great to sync the motions up with the soundtrack too.

Step Three

In this project I worked with the value curve editor to create some nice motions and easing for these objects and transitions. Focusing in on making purposeful animation, that feels good!

Dogfight

This project focused on working with the speed curve editor. This was pretty fun once I got the hang of those curves! I story-boarded out the sequence first to get an idea of the choreography. I created this background using the amazing Photoshop brushes from Kyle Webster.

Dreidels Logo

Here I was able to apply my new skills in creating oscillations. Giving this logo a sense of fun and springy-ness.

Pong Challenge

In this project, I worked with several interacting elements. Applying principles such as anticipation, overshoots, easing and squash n’ stretch. This was super fun and quite challenging!

Cow Blasting

Here the focus was on working with mechanical movement and oscillations.. watch out for those evil robot cows taking over!

Brainhole Logo

This project came around half way through the course and allowed me the opportunity to apply the variety of skills I had learned up to this point.

Nudl Logo

This gave me the opportunity to work with the principles of follow thoughs and oscillations. This one has a nice bouncy feel to it, to help promote these marvellous swimming pool accessories!

Ball Bounces

Here, I focused on different kinds of bounces and how these may effect interactions with other elements.

Circle Society

Working with the principle of reinforcing movement. Warning: this content contains shape prejudices!

Scrapbook Elvis

In this project we worked with the animation principles, but adapted them to suit this quirky stop motion style. Looks like an amazing show!

Summary

From taking this course, I have gained the following skills:

– Becoming fluent with understanding the value and speed graph editors.
– Controlling the viewers eye and making work that is pleasing to watch.
– Developing a critical-eye for animation, creating great movement quicker and easier.
– Building up a comprehensive animation vocabulary.
– Implementing techniques and principles such as easing, timing, spacing, oscillations, bounces, follow throughs, squash n’ stretch, secondary animation, anticipation & overshoots, reinforcing movement, eye trace and stop motion style animation.

It was a lot of fun too and I highly recommend it. Thanks School of Motion!
