Animation Process and Timescale

Animation production times can range a lot in turnaround time. If it is a shorter project such as a logo animation or simple motion graphics loop for social media, this can be produced within a matter of days. However if seeking a longer animation of around 30 seconds up to 10 minutes you need to factor in a turnaround time of between 4 to 8 weeks to complete. This depends on two key variables. Firstly: complexity. A simple motion graphics project is quicker to produce than a detailed character animation. Secondly: duration. The shorter the script, the quicker it will take to make. The process outlined below applies to the whole process from brief through to delivery and is based on most of the longer animations that I have worked on.

There are exceptions to this rule. For instance, an agency supplied me with all the visual assets and the storyboard. The outcome was simple motion graphics, so the work was quick to produce and I created 4 videos totalling 10 minutes within a couple of weeks. Every project is unique. Once I have found out more about your project, I can provide an estimate of time required to complete it. Or you may have a deadline in mind. Either way, please feel free to get in touch to gain further clarity on timescale.

Planning & Pre–Production: 1 – 2 Weeks

1

Brief / Script

To start with, key topics will be discussed including audience, duration and desired outcomes for the animation. The client may share a brief or script. Whether complete or not, Charlie can provide expertise at this stage and help edit the script to make it optimal for the narrative of the animation.
2

Storyboard

Charlie will explore and sketch out concepts from the script. This will result in a ‘sketched storyboard’ which will provide a clear visual impression showing all the events that will take place throughout the animation.
3

Art Direction

Style frames will be created to give a sense of the final animation in terms of character and environment design, colours, textures, and overall look. Following delivery of these along with the storyboard, the client will have an opportunity to review and feedback. Following any edits and approval, Charlie can move onto production.

Production: 2 – 4 Weeks

1

Audio Recording

Once the script has been signed off, Charlie can arrange for a studio recording of a professional voice-over artist to provide the final voice-over. If on a tighter budget, other options can also be provided.
2

Design Development

Using the storyboard and art direction as a clear guide, all characters and scenes are designed in preparation for the final animation. The focus is on achieving a beautiful and consistent look across the whole animation.
3

Asset Development

Characters and objects may need to be rigged so they can be easily controlled when it comes to animating. Consideration may also be given to prepare for camera moves, transitions and effects within the scene.
4

Animation

This is where the magic happens! Whether it is character animation or motion graphics (or both), Charlie uses industry-standard software to create believable movement and emotion. Scenes are put together with seamless transitions and good pacing, resulting in a high quality, professional outcome that will ensure high audience engagement.
5

Production Review Points

Throughout the production steps and following delivery of the final animation, Charlie delivers a regular ‘edit-in-progress.’ This depends on the overall timeline but typically this is provided every fortnight. This keeps the client in the loop and allows a regular opportunity for feedback if required.

Post–Production: 1 – 2 Weeks

1

Music & Sound Design

One of our trusted sound designers will now complete production of a gorgeous soundtrack and sound effects to boost all the visuals. This extra dimension adds a new layer of awesomeness to the animation! If on a tighter budget, other options can also be provided. The client can provide a final round of feedback after this point if they wish.
2

Delivery

The animation is now ready for the client and can be sent via online transfer. The client can then use it for whatever their purpose is, for example: on their website, YouTube, social media platforms, an event, television or film. It is time to WOW your audience!

Illustration Process and Timescale

Illustration production is much quicker than animation generally. Turnaround time is usually within a week or two depending on the scope and complexity of the project. From the brief, sketches are developed for initial approval from the client. Following that, further iterations / sketches may get developed before a final version of the illustration is completed and delivered. Charlie is also available on a day rate for live visual scribing / graphic facilitation work.
